Klaus A J Riederer – Fine Art Photography

When I stare to myself in a mirror, I can’t help contemplating that I don’t have the faintest idea of who the person really is behind that glass wall. What are his gut feelings? Is he able to love, what does he dream about?

Although these questions have pondered on me at least one third of my life, it stands on pure destiny how my life’s struggles, and above all those occurred during the passing month, have changed me. As soon as I figured having enough of making art, a lifetime of chance opened on me: to take part in the “3 to 7” workshop lead by the honorable photographer Arno Rafael Minkkinen, in Kotka Aug 3 – 7, 2009. Arno’s key question “Are you teachable?” echoes in my mind, as I consider how much work I’ve done I need to give up, in order to go further upon my journey. Thanks to my unique teacher and skillfull course comrades, I started taking photographs in a totally new way. But above all during the process I learned to find direction to my life. Thinking back, so many lessons I’ve contradicted before seem now to make sense.

In the exhibition I will not only show my final course work, but also another series that I could not stop making, starting even from the very moment I drove back from Kotka. Induced by Arno, I’m also going back to my roots; audition. Hence, the third part of the exhibition is work on sound. It will remain on the perception of the visitor, if I can extent my expertise: to create three-dimensional sound scape to the demanding acoustics in the gallery.

The outcome of the exhibition is something totally unpredictable to me. Perhaps this reflects well the journey within me.

Photography works

The fourteen photography works involve a photographic ensemble Naked truth (1 - 7) and a photographic series Walks of life (8 -14).
All works are unmanipulated (but image adjusted, of course) single exposure shots, taken and processed in every aspect by yours truly. Because of the many requests by the public, I have already (prior to the end of the exhibition) published my works shown in Kotka Valokuvakeskus here (or the image above), which opens a new window.

Auditory works

The obvious third part of the exhibition consist of unmanipulated, (with my) open meatus real-head recorded natural (3-dimensional) sound scapes within you here my voice telling the Journey into my head. The crosstalk canceled binaural reproduction (i.e., playback made for two loudspeaker reproduction) included, of course, seven parts, each ca. 1 minute long. Condisering the public, and my language of cognition, I spoke the Finnish language. Because I'm a naïve fool, I will publish here also the Journey into my head, my Sound scape of seven parts, nevertheless, don't forget my copyright.

Although the reproduction prefers good/high quality headphones or loudspeakers, because of using my head, open meatus and many other factors (as explained, e.g., in my PhD Thesis), you most likely will not get strond 3-D percepts of the surrounding sound scape, at least when using loudspeakers. For my trained ears, the first version works best, but your are welcome to try the others as well. Ultimately, as this is (supposed to be, at least) art, the concept is more important than the implementation. ;)

But please do me a favor: listen to the first version with good quality headphones. Trust me, it will be worth your while. :)

Technique

I have taken all the photographs in the exhibition with a Canon EOS 40D digital reflex camera, printed with an Epson 11880 pigmented inkjet printer and mounted to 2 mm aluminium composite sheets.

Talk / Seminar: Making fine art using pigment inks.
Fine art printmaker KAR / Klaus A J Riederer speaks (in Finnish) about the today's way of making fine art works for museums, collectors, photographers, interiorer designers, and all alike creaving for quality and longevity. The method is sometimes referred to as Gicglée works, and may include whatever kind of art (photography, graphics, acvarelles etc.) that a digital image file may contain. The talk consideres the complete work flow from scanning to post processing (framing, mounting etc.).
The talk is free of charge & open for all interested, a limited amount of refereshments are provided.

In the exhibition I will show my final course work, the photographic ensemble of the seven works done during and for the course. They will be shown jointly with the works from my colleagues of the workshop, as well as the works by the other members of Kotka Photographic centre.

I have taken all the photographs in the exhibition with a Canon EOS 40D digital reflex camera, printed with a Epson 11880 pigmented inkjet printer on Kodak Professional Lustre Paper. The works are of size 30 x 40 cm2, according to the rules of the joint exhibition.
